Cabbages for dinner tonight!
Senior students at Apii Avarua are participating in the first school growing programme to encourage them into agriculture careers.
The programme is in partnership with Korero o te Orau, Te Ipukarea Society and the Ministry of Health.
The Agriculture Ministry said the programme involved teaching students the benefits of growing their own produce, a way of providing the knowledge of agriculture and the importance that it has on people’s livelihoods.
Korero o te Orau assisted in building the programme, and Te Ipukarea Society teaches the students composting and worm farming.
The Ministry of Health assists in demonstrating how healthy living can be achieved through growing your own food.
The secretary for Agriculture Temarama Anguna-Kamana had earlier said that there has been noticeable decline in youth branching out into agricultural careers because there was a lack of knowledge and exposure on types of careers in the agriculture field and what to study when going to College or University.
Schools participating are Apii Avarua, Apii Takitumu, Apii Nikao, Te Uki Ou and Saint Joseph.
